Setting Up Your Share This! Once your Share This! is installed and placed on the page, there are a few steps that you will need to follow before you can begin sharing pages.
Choosing Your Sharing Sites Share This! Allows you to post pages from your DNN site on a number of different social media websites including; Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Digg, Live Spaces, StumbleUpon, Myspace, and Bebo. You can also enable emailing a friend instead of posting a public link. You first need to choose which of these sites you want to include share opportunities on your page. To do this, I will need to explain now the process works and how to modify it to your unique needs…
Sharing Resources (#1 if you're following along with the screenshots) On the “Share Links” tab in the administration, notice the listing of share sites. Each listing includes the Icon that is being used to represent it as well as a green checkmark. The Green Checkmark indicates if that site is activated in THIS instance of Share This! Notice that by default some of the share sites are activated and some are not. We included the more popular sites by default (Facebook and Twitter) while other more lesser used sites have been deactivated… mostly because I’ve never heard of them before actually writing this documentation (Bebo). Okay, now you know how to see if something is being used or not… but how do you change that? That leads to my next point…
Activating and Deactivating Sharing Sites To change the combination of sharing sites being used in THIS instance of Share This!, you must modify the “Master Layout” template. That can be found in the Templates Tab in the administration. When Share This! loads, it checks to see which share site tokens are included in that template and loads them. The administration displays which are being used in the Sharing Resources list. By adding a share site token to the Master Layout template, the green arrow will appear alerting you that it’s being used.
Modifying Share Link Icons/Text Share This! allows you to display the link to the sharing site as an icon or a text link. You can use the default icon, upload a custom icon for each or edit the text that displays.
Universal Settings (#2 in the screenshot) Usually, you would want all of the links to be the same for each. In the universal settings section you have the option of setting all links to Icon Mode or Text Mode. Keep in mind that if you have a special need and want to mix text and icon, you can do that too. In the following section, I’ll explain how to override this setting.
Share Link Settings (#3 in the screenshot) The box under the Universal Settings is where you modify individual information for each share site. Click one of the share site names in the Sharing Resources. The information for that share site will appear in the box.
Custom Icons (Also #3 in the screenshot) Click the Add Custom Icon button to upload a new icon for this site. Note that there is no image sizing in Share This!, so you’ll want to make sure that you properly size your icons ahead of time. You can always revert to the original default icon included with Share This! by clicking the “Revert to Default” button.
Custom Text Link (Also #3 in the screenshot) Changing the text in the “Text” field will change the text that appears in the share site link.
Overriding Universal Settings (Also #3 in the screenshot) To override the Universal Settings for an individual link, click the override checkbox and change the mode that appears.
Share This! is fully template-able and that is what makes it such a useful tool on your DNN website. You can change the layout of everything, omit any of the data field and so on and so forth.
The templates use standard HTML. You can add anything you want in there to wrap your tokens in – from tables to divs. You can set up the layout via CSS (using your skin.css, portal.css or the Share This! module.css)
Master Layout The Master Layout includes all of the Share Site tokens. This will be the initial icon (or text) list of share sites on the site.
Email Form The email form is used when you include the email sharing functionality to Share This! This is the layout of the email form which either pops up when the email icon is clicked or the form on the page that it is linked to. In this template, you will include tokens for each text field as well as tokens for the error messages for each. There are numerous tokens that can be added to this section; please take a look at our token reference to get a better idea of this section’s full potential.
Email Message Body This will be the layout of the email that is sent to the person the page is being shared with. You can add any token from the Email Form to display that data.
Thank You This message will replace the email form after it is submitted.
Miscellaneous Options
Facebook Preview When a user clicks the share with Facebook icon on your site, Facebook will attempt to choose an image to associate the content with. By uploading an image here, it will add meta-data to the page that will tell Facebook to use this image.

If you copy and paste the XML config from one instance of Share This! to another instance, it will import all of your settings and templates to the new instance. This is extremely useful when using Share This! numerous times across your site but wanting to retain and similar look and feel. If you change any settings outside the XML config after importing, it will not affect any other instance. Each XML config is stand alone; they are not linked in any way.
