How to Display an RSS feed on your DotNetNuke Website

Posted By: Todd Bollinger on 08/18/2011

Need some content to fill a void in your website? Do you have a technology or sports website?  Displaying an RSS feed of news and articles can compliment your own website's content.

RSS known as "Really Simple Syndication" is used on websites to publish news and articles in a standard way so that many different reader programs can subscribe and read what is published.

In this article, I will show you how easy it is to display an RSS feed from another website on your own website.

Finding an RSS Feed

First we need to find an RSS feed to use for the website. Let’s say it's a website about NFL football.  Searching Google for "nfl sport news" will show several websites.

When you look at the news section in each of these websites, look for a logo or button that says RSS or looks like the following buttons on the right.

Click on the RSS logo or link and you will see the RSS feed.  Now copy the URL in your Internet browser's address bar and save that for later. You should now have your RSS feed URL address for use with your website.

*Please Note: Some RSS feeds are copyright protected.  Please check with the website's owner before using an RSS feed to display on your website.*

Displaying an RSS Feed on your DotNetNuke Website

1. Login to your website using a Host permission level account.  You will have the correct permissions if you see "Host" as one of the links at the top of the website.

2. Click the "Host" link

3. Click "Extensions"

4. Hover over the arrow pointing down on the left side of "Extensions".  Then click "Install Available Extensions"

5. Check the box next to "NewsFeeds". If it's not there, you might have it already installed.

6. Click the "Install Selected Extensions" link at the bottom of the webpage

7. Navigate to the page you would like the RSS feed to be displayed

8. Look for the Add Module section of the control panel at the top of the website.  Do the following:

- Next to "Module:" select "NewsFeeds"
- Next to "Pane:" select the content pane where you would like the RSS feed to be displayed
- Next to "Title:" enter the title you would like to be displayed for your RSS feed

9. Click the "Add Module" button to add the NewsFeeds module to your page

10. Hover over the arrow pointing down on the left side of the module you added to the page.  Then click "Edit Newsfeeds"

11. Click the "Add Feed" link

12. Enter the RSS feed URL address that you saved from before. Then click the "Update" link

13. Click the "Update" link to return to the page

You now should see the RSS feed on your website.
